Book Review: The Priory of the Orange Tree
I read The Priory of the Orange Tree by Samantha Shannon back in February/March 2019, but this book has easily become one of my personal favorites, so I need to talk about this book and recommend it to everyone!
If you love dragons, adventure, LGBTQ+ cast of characters, and a world that could rival Middle Earth, then you need this book on your bookshelf! I started this book while during a massive book slump, and this beautiful book just ignited my love for reading all over again. The book is intense, complex, dense, beautiful, and perfect. Truly, it's hard to pinpoint any place in this story was I was bored or frustrated. There are four different POVs and a massive character list, but Shannon kept the story beautiful woven together as to not lose the characters' identity in the mix. So, what made this book so different from other fantasy novels of today? The characters, internal conflicts, self-doubt, and a world connecting them all together. Even in a fantasy world with dragons, magic, and prophecy, the characters are realistic. Despite their religious and ethnic differences, they are all human and strive and try for the same things. And the friendships and romance are such a breath of fresh air, and it made the journey you go on with these characters all the more enjoyable. It made the world feel real, relatable, and beautiful.
