ARC Book Review: Who I Was With Her

5/5 Stars.

Let me just start with saying I cried through like, 75% of this book.

Who I Was With Her by debut author Nita Tyndall is a hard-hitting story of grief, learning who you are and what you want, and the fear of coming out when the world brings judgement at every corner. The story follows Corinne, a closeted bisexual who lost her girlfriend, Maggie, in a tragic accident, and now has to deal with her grief and loss alone since their relationship was a secret. The book goes back and forth between the past and present in Corinne's pov, giving the reader an idea of who Corinne was with Maggie and who she struggles to be now that she's gone.

This book used my heart as a punching bag and I enjoyed every minute of it. This story is an absolutely beautiful, grim, and realistic portrayal of grief that was handled with sensitivity. Grief isn't linear. Grief is messy, dark, selfish... Corinne goes through every phase of it. She is flawed, she's complicated, she's a tangled knot of fear and sorrow and regret, but I loved the character even more for it. Corinne's story and her struggles are genuine, especially when it came to trying to find who she truly was and what she wanted that wasn't a part of the expectations she felt from her of her partners, friends, and family.

Tyndall's writing style sweeps you up in Corinne's spiraling anguish, and some sentences really pound emotions straight into your heart. Their writing is fluid, emotional, and will take your emotions on a rollercoaster ride. They also wrote in asexual representation, and I loved how it was handled. This book just checked off the whole list on everything for a book about heartbreak, working through grief, and coming out.

All in all, this was a fabulous debut, and I'll definitely be recommending this book!

Who I Was With Her has definitely become a new personal favorite, and I can't wait to get my hands on a physical copy once it's published!

I received an early copy from the publisher via Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
