ARC Book Review: Shielded
Ever since I first saw the cover floating around, I was intrigued. Upon seeing the summary, I was extremely intrigued!
Kaylynn Flanders brings such a magical world and wonderful heroine in her debut novel. The strong world-building and unique magic system proves that Flanders took the time and research to make all of the ideas work together. The magic doesn't feel thrown in there for the sake of there being magic, and it's original enough that it can stand on its own and not be easily compared to other magic we've seen before.
Shielded does have a bit of a slow beginning, but once you're past the initial set-up of the world and characters, the book hits the gas pedal and keeps you hooked until you've finished it without realizing you read all day! One feature that kept me reading was Flanders' own twist on tropes we've seen time and time again. There are the usual tropes -the girl who isn't like other girls because they're strong, and the like- but Flanders puts her own twist on them that helps keep the interest going with the characters. The main character, Jenna, has to struggle and fight through so many situations, but her anxieties still shine through her strength, which goes to show she's human just as anyone else and can't be strong 24/7.
Overall, Shielded was a wonderful read and a great debut for Flanders! If you're looking for a new series to get your hands on, definitely pick up this book!
I received an early copy from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
