ARC Book Review: She's Too Pretty to Burn
This book was a wild ride that fit the bill of a enjoyable psychological thriller!
She's Too Pretty to Burn by Wendy Heard is a sapphic, gender-swapped inspiration of The Picture of Dorian Gray, filled with tension, twists at every corner, and a writing style that captivates the reader. The story follows two characters: Mick and Veronica. Mick (Micaela) is an extremely shy, self-conscious, and depressed teen with a crumbling family life. Veronica leads a more outgoing lifestyle, is an aspiring photographer, and finds an instant connection with Mick. When one seemingly innocent photograph is taken, that's enough to throw their lives into complete chaos.
I have to start with how much I enjoyed Mick and Veronica. Both of them are messy, flawed, and complex as characters, and that's what adds to the utter chaos that goes on in this book. They both find themselves in situations that bring out toxic actions. Both of them try to grab on to some sense of purpose and belonging that when they get a taste of it, it gives them a crazed taste of power and rebellion, in their own way. Their romance is born out of instant connection that is not only sometimes used to their advantage to get what they want, but it also continues to grow into something deeper as the destruction brings them together. It's so, so messy, and gosh I loved it with this story.
The story itself is dark, disturbing, fast-paced... the perfect concoction that makes up an anxiety-filled ride of a psychological thriller... that's queer! There's never a dull moment, and the story keeps you intrigued with each chapter making it impossible to put down. It's a thriller through and through, keeping the reader in a constant adrenaline-pumped state of mind as to what could possibly happen next.
I felt the ending dragged out a little bit, but it still ended on a tense, unsettling note of 'oh god this is how it ends no I need more akfhsiugbid.'
She's Too Pretty to Burn is an excellent thriller added to the YA book world, which I couldn't recommend enough to read!
