ARC Book Review: Set Fire to the Gods
The cover instantly hooked me and reeled me in! I have read books by Sara Raasch over the years, but this is my first book by Kristen Simmons. I haven't read many books that had co-authors, so I was intrigued as to how the writing would be with two different authors.
Set Fire to the Gods follows the characters Ash and Madoc, in a world where six gods rule by having human gladiators fight the wars for them. It is such an interesting concept and huge world, but we only get to see a small part of it. At points, it felt as though you were given some crumbs, even though a whole cake was in your view but just out of your reach. I'm hoping more is to be seen in the next installment. Otherwise, the details given of the world, its people, the magic, and the like, kept the entire read endlessly fascinating. Even with two authors on this book, their writing flowed together beautifully without any jarring moments.
I enjoyed Ash and Madoc, but their romance felt very quick and sudden. I wished there had been something deeper and more emotional to their development, but it didn't take away from either of the characters or the story. Each are their own, and you can tell the authors put their love and time into their individual development and character arcs. However, that being said, I feel they still could have done more with the minor characters. The book is heavily world and plot driven with big reveals hidden to both the characters and the reader, which made for an enjoyable read all the same, but some characters fell behind or blended in with the rest of the crowd. There needs to be some kind of balance with the world and characters so it doesn't feel like you're reading a heavy duty fictional history book with minor characters involved.
Oh, but the action was superb! If you were wanting some classic gladiator fight scenes, then you're in for a real treat!
In the end, Set Fire to the Gods was an enjoyable read with a vast world and good cast of characters, and I will be picking up the next book!
I received an early copy from the publisher via Edelweiss+ in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
